Vouvant is known as one of the 'Plus Beaux Villages' of France and is classified under the label: 'Petites Cités de Caractère' a symbol of remarkable architectural and natural heritage.
In this picture postcard village you can visit the Church of L’Église Notre Dame where the impressive Romanesque frontage of this building features wonderful carvings. Venturing through the door, you will discover intricate sculptures and life-sized statues including the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist.
A 'must-see' is the 'Tour Mélusine' which, according to legend, was built by the fairy Mélusine in a single night. A truly 'fairy tale' tower!
You can get a bite to eat at a café or restaurant in the village including the 'Café de Mélusine' where the food is also reported to be magical (rated no 1 in Vouvant and 4.5 stars by Tripadvisor).
Just a few steps away is the verdant forest of Mervent, an idyllic escape bordering a lake of more than 300 acres.
With this magnificent natural reserve on the doorstep, Vouvant is a heavenly destination for budding artists in search of inspiration. Known as a ‘village of artists’, in the summer at least a dozen artists open their doors to share their work. As well as individuals, there are creative studios hosting many exhibitions celebrating known and up-and-coming artists.
Who knows, some of that fairy dust might rub off on you and you could discover a new vocation. Start cleaning your brushes now....
